Late last year I received a composition commission from the Queens Council on the Arts to create a new work of music that speaks to under represented identities and tells untold stories within Queens. My project "A Voice for the Voiceless" is inspired by and developed with children experiencing housing instability and homelessness in NYC public schools. Working with non-profits, homeless shelters, and after school programs, I hosted music making sessions with at risk kids. In these sessions, we recorded the children speaking, rapping, and reciting poetry, creating a recorded library of their voices. These recordings became the basis of a collection of music that gives a voice to some of the most vulnerable members of our community. This project culminates in a world premiere concert at the Queens Theatre on September 14th. Guitarist Pavel Rivera and drummer Bryan Bisordi, as well as some of our student poets, will help me bring this music to life. The concert is free, all ages, and open to the public. I hope you can join us.
