When filmmaker Sam Kolesnik and I were developing ideas for the score for the short film Mama's Boy, we were focusing on the idea of maternal relationships. Specifically, how one might carry their maternal relationship inside themselves throughout life. With this in mind, I wanted to find "internal" sounds. The voice is the most obvious internal sound, as it's the only instrument that comes from inside ourselves.
I originally created a demo for Sam, to share with her my vocal ideas: repetative, overlapping rhythms, sung slightly atonally with non-word vowels and consonants. My intention was to realize this performance with a group of singers interacting, but Sam liked my voice on the demo and ask me to sing it (!!!). Listen to the final cue above, which leads up to the climax of the film.
